Do you knowPORTUGAL?MADEIRA?CÂMARA DE LOBOS?

Madeira officially the Autonomous Region of Madeira (Portuguese: Região Autónoma da Madeira), is one of two autonomous regions of Portugal, the other being the Azores. It is an archipelago situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, in a region known as Macaronesia, just under 400 kilometres (250 mi) to the north of the Canary Islands and 520 kilometres (320 mi) west of the Kingdom of Morocco. Madeira is geologically located on the African Tectonic Plate, although its people are descended from Portuguese settlers. Its population was 251,060 in 2021. The capital of Madeira is Funchal, which is located on the main island's south coast.

Câmara de Lobos is a municipality, parish and town in the south-central coast of the island of Madeira. Technically a suburb of the much larger capital city of Funchal, it is one of the larger population centres and an extension of the Funchal economy.

Do you know our school?

The EBSLMSD school is located in Câmara de Lobos, one of the oldest cities on the island of Madeira. Due to the geographical location of the Island and its climate, it is known for its excellent green spaces. The school is a primary and secondary school, from the 5th year to the 12th year, divided into 3 cycles, 2nd cycle (5th and 6th year), where the age group of the students is 10-11 years (7th, 8th and 9th grade), where the age range of pupils is from 12 to 15 years, Secondary (10, 11, And 12 years) where the age of the students varies between 15 and 18 years and the professional coursesdedicated to the areas of catering, commerce and informatics.

The students who attend these courses are students with appetence for the areas described above and that when they finish the course, they go directly to the job market. We also have immigrants students, mainly brazilians and students with disadvantages or difficulties learning. We have about 800 students, 128 teachers and about 50 employees.

One of the characteristics of our school is to be dynamic and always ready to innovate and participate in innovative projects our concern for the environment has made our school classified as an eco-school. Despite the fact that the population of Madeira has always been aware of the need for environmental conservation, in the last decade, the development of mass tourism, deforestation and other aspects have made the island's nature threatened. It is our greatest motivation to join this project, transmit to our students a more eco-friendly version of their daily and future activities that do not endanger the biodiversity of our environment.

Madeira has Laurisilva forests, almost extinct throughout the world, being the only Unesco
Natural Heritage in Portugal, with a very varied fauna and flora where endemic species and some endangered species abound. To conserve these species it is essential to conserve our natural spaces, a key idea that we want to transmit at school. On the other hand, We think participating in thisproject will be an asset to us all, enriching us and a way to exchange experiences.
- The people responsible for the project are effective teachers of the school (maths, ICT, English, and Science teachers) There are many interested in participating in this project, so there will be no continuity problems if one has to leave. We have the support of the President of the Council of the Educational Community and the President of the Pedagogical Council, also active in the project.
